Books of Halloweens Past

Every year I put a list of Halloween reads together for myself. As I’m currently working my way through my 2016 picks, with only 4 days left until Halloween, I’m looking back at the books I chose to read in previous years.

I’m a big fan of April Genevieve Tucholke and always recommend the Between duology as a top pick for Halloween as they are such haunting and beautiful books. I would also recommend Gena Showalter’s Alice in Zombieland series – one of my all-time favourites with an action-packed Buffy the Vampire Slayer feel. And Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Childrehas a great vibe. It was unusual and unexpected with a cast of interesting and imaginative characters. Especially with the movie release (which I really enjoyed), this is a good series to pick up at this time of year.

I just picked 3 books for 2015 and all 3 were wonderful for getting into the spirit of Halloween. The Madman’s Daughter is a dark and twisty read set on a mysterious island. I’m a huge fan of Charlaine Harris and enjoyed delving in the world of Aurora Teagarden. I’m a big fan of the Sookie Stackhouse and Harper Connelly series, both of which I’d recommend. I picked The Uninvited up in August and saved it for October. I’ve read all of Cat Winters’ books (I love them) and any one of them would be a fantastic pick for Halloween.

This is my list for this year. What can I say . . . it got a little out of hand. But I like a challenge. So far I’ve read Shadow House: The Gathering and Labyrinth Lost, plus one ghost story a day from the Scholastic Classics book. If I keep it up I’ll be ending on Halloween with The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. But that still leaves 4 unread books and 4 days until Halloween . . . !
