The Last by Hanna Jameson – A well-imagined post-apocalyptic world set in a remote hotel as winter draws in. As the world is under nuclear attack, twenty survivors remain at the hotel. Jon keeps record with a day-by-day account of everything happening to the group, which is what we read. Jon also discovers a body, coming to the conclusion that a killer is among them. As Jon launches into a potentially dangerous investigation, the hotel is cut off from the world with no news and little idea of what is happening outside. It’s a risk to leave and a risk to stay, making this an unsettling and compelling read. I felt involved and on edge throughout. It had all the good bits of a post-apocalyptic thriller and murder mystery, with a dash of horror, and this combination made it such a stand out read for me. A perfect pick for dark, winter nights. I’d recommend to fans of Josh Malerman’s Bird Box.
